WAN Check Editor's Review

WAN Check is a free tool that allows you to check if your Internet connection is alive or not.

In case your Internet connection isn't active, the application sends you a message in order to alert you. You can also set the application to send you a message when the connection is active (after the reconnection).

The application comes as a daemon but you have to do some initial settings. Then it runs in background. It is completely invisible for you in case there isn't a certain situation when it should alert you because of some event.

You can check if it's running by using the OS X Activity Monitor. In order to shut it down you have to kill the daemon from the Activity Monitor. If you would like to reset application's profile, then you can find a second program in the package that can be used in order to do this.

The program can write a log file to the disk. It has multiple logging possibilities: basic, detailed and debugging. You can also turn off the log. Another thing that you can enable is the email notification engine.

The first time when I ran the application it throw an error. You can see that error in my second screenshot. It appeared when I used one of the logging modes. If I started the application with the logging mode off and then activate one of the logging modes, then everything was all right.

Pluses: it is free and is pretty useful if you have an unstable connection and you want to get notified every time when the connections drops.

Drawbacks / flaws: it runs only as a daemon so in order to shut it down you have to search its process in the Activity Monitor. It throws a script error code when trying to launch it for the first time and use a logging mode.

In conclusion: is a pretty useful tool even though it has some minor issues.

WAN Check Publisher's Description

WAN Check automatically checks to see if your internet connection is still active. If it isn't, it alerts you with a message. You can also let it notify you if you are reconnected to the internet. The WAN Check daemon runs as a background process, so you will only see it in the OS X Activity Monitor.
